The newest and largest addition to the Carleen Bright Arboretum in Woodway is Trailside Gardens, developed by McLennan County Master Gardeners. MCMG member Anita Dawson and her husband, Jerry, made a significant financial contribution in memory of their fathers, James C. Webster and Aubrey T. Dawson, allowing development of the gardens to begin. To honor these gentlemen and the plants they loved, plantings include EarthKind roses and other water-wise and native plants. A 1.3 mile trail system will eventually wind through Arboretum grounds, and the Trailside Gardens will be a showy and welcoming part of the trail, with benches, arbors, shade, and fragrance.
Many thanks to all of you wonderful volunteers who worked in the rain yesterday, all those who helped organize and advertise the plant sale, AND all of you who donated the plants to make our sale such a success!
We had quite a variety of plants this year thanks to the diversity of gardeners in our group. The rain did not keep the avid gardeners in our community from coming out, and we had a little bit of everything for everyone!
Co-sponsored by the Carleen Bright Arboretum and McLennan County Master Gardeners, the Children's Garden Fair attracted over 750 people Sunday, October 19. Perfect autumn weather brought parents and children to the free event, held at the Arboretum from 3 to 5 p.m. Demonstrations included Rainwater Harvesting, Worm Composting, Insect Identification, and After Dinner Gardening. Children were able to make and take home grow cards, painted rocks, butterfly creations, leaf rubbings, grow babies, and transplants. Other activities included popcorn from the cob, music, and an Arboretum scavenger hunt.

Approximately 200 students participated in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Saturday, February 24, 2007. McLennan County Master Gardeners worked with students at the campus entrance, planting Knock Out roses, adding newspaper and mulch to planted areas, and trimming and cleaning up a mature crape myrtle and fountain area. Several other Master Gardeners had worked earlier to install several large boulders and gravel at the entrance. Students from neighboring schools will be responsible on a regular basis for maintaining the newly planted areas.
